Petition 06-2027 (AHT Tech Attending)

Describe the Issue

The current rules governing horse racing require state that licensed Animal Health Technologists must be under the supervision and control of a licensed veterinarian without explicitly defining 'supervision'. The current Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) rule states the following with respect to supervision of AHT's: the supervising veterinarian is on the same premises as the supervised AHT at least once a day where the veterinary practice activity takes place and has direct communication with the supervised AHT. The veterinarian need not be on the premises at the time the activity takes place.

Petition 08-2027 (Social Media Conduct)

Describe the Issue

Social media has become an important part of the horse racing industry. Comments, posts, videos, photographs and other online communications can be viewed and shared by large audiences and can have a significant impact on individuals and on the public reputation of Alberta horse racing. A clear rule is needed to establish that licensees are expected to maintain appropriate professional standards when using social media or electronic communications in connection with horse racing, while preserving the right of licensees to express legitimate opinions and criticism.
