Take notice that the Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency (CPMA) has officially included the addition of apomorphine as well as the quantitative limit for arsenic in blood to the Schedule of the Pari-Mutuel Betting Supervision Regulations.
Apomorphine is a dopamine agonist and can affect numerous physical and mental functions and therefore potentially affect the performance of a racehorse. It will be added to section 1 of the Schedule.
Arsenic is considered a performance-altering substance with considerable gastrointestinal toxic effects. Because arsenic is naturally occurring in the environment, horse blood contains low levels of arsenic. This amendment will add arsenic to section 2 of the Schedule and will adopt the international threshold of 15 ng/ml in blood to control the use of arsenic in Canadian racehorses.
Testing for these drugs will begin on May 1st, 2026.
The CPMA strongly recommends consulting a veterinarian on any decision to administer supplements or medications to racehorses.
