Directive No. 120-2020 — All Breeds

The Rules Governing Horse Racing in Alberta are AMENDED as follows:

Chapter 3: General Horse Racing Rules, Part 2 Race Meetings, Division 5 Race Day

The following Rule 251 g is AMENDED to read:

Rule 251 s Dead Heat Prizes

The horse whose nose reaches the wire first is the winner. If there is a dead heat for first, both horses shall be considered winners. In races having more than one heat or dash, where two horses are tied in the summary, the winner of the longer dash or heat shall be entitled to the trophy. Where the dashes or heats are of the same distance and the horses are tied in the summary, the winner of the faster dash or heat shall be entitled to the trophy. Where the dashes for heats are of the same time, both horses shall be considered winners and the entitlement of the trophy will be decided by lot.

Rule 251 t Dead Heat Prizes:

(1) When 2 or more horses finish in a dead heat for 1st place the prizes allocated for 1st and 2nd finishing horses must, if possible, and subject to subsection

(2) be divided equally between those horses that finished in a dead heat, and the same principle applies to:

(a) a division of prizes between whatever the number of horses that finish in dead heats, and

(b) whatever the finish position in which the dead heat occurs.

(2) If a non-monetary prize cannot be divided equally or otherwise among persons entitled to it, the judges/stewards board may decide the matter by drawing lots for the prize.
