It was a grand day of racing Saturday, particularly if you were Lyle Magnuson and Max Gibb.

The pairing won five of the seven Alberta-Bred races, while Angelle Carter and Ryan McLean were single race winners.

“I’m trying not to get to emotional, not to get too hyped up,” said the RMTC CEO, showing great composure despite the day’s outing.

“This is Max Gibb’s day,” exclaimed trainer Lyle Magnuson.

“He should get all the credit, after all he is the owner and the breeder of most of our winners. I’m just the trainer.”

To underline the good feelings for Max and Lyle, RMTC donated more than $10,000 to the Alberta Diabetes Association.

“We sold two horses through an auction with the association, plus donations, and we will assess our donations again at year’s end.”

Gibb was certainly in his glory Saturday as his Rocky Mountain Turf Club Stable took four races, and then a fifth in conjunction with Type One To Type None Stables. And Magnuson trained them all.

Jose Roca rode Georgi Girl’s Kiss to victory in the opening race for the pairing of Gibb and Magnuson to win the Alberta Bred Stakes for Two Year Olds. In the second race Larris Allen took over in the saddle to bring The Little Gene home on top of the Alberta-Bred Stake for Fillies and Mares.

The Little Gene is by Real West out of Fighting Maud by Maudlin and bred by Gibb.

The fourth race was another win for the pairing with Larris Allen aboard She’s It Again to take the Alberta Bred Stake for Three Year Old Fillies. Gibb again was the breeder with She’s It Again by Cape Canaveral out of She’s Italian by Hail the Rukus.

Then in the sixth Allen was again aboard as Why Not Live took the Alberta Bred Stake for Three Year Olds. Gibb again The winner was by Cape Canaveral out of C.C. and Riley by Hail the Rukus.

Finally Larris, Gibb and Magnuson went to the winner’s circle with Italian By Marriage to win the Alberta Bred Stake, over seven furlongs. Gibb used Guilded Time as the sire out of She’s Italian by Hail the Rukus.

Angelle Carter took the Alberta Bred Stake For Fillies and Mares over seven furlongs with her great horse Smile Lee. Ramiro Sanchez Castillo was the jockey.

Neville Stephenson rode Gabe’s Pride to victory in the Alberta Bred Sate, covering five and a half furlongs, to give Ryan McLean. The horse was bred at Bar None Ranches with Langfuhr the side out of Gabe’s Prospect by Allen’s Prospect.

Sunday’s card kicked off with a pair of Canada Quarter Horse Derby Trials. Janet Sather’s Cruisinfourabruisin leads the eight qualifiers into the Finals Sept. 27. Cruisin stopped the watches at 19.879 covering the 400 yards. Janet also qualified Tequilla Tuesday,

“I was happy with the outcomes,” she stated. ”I finished first and second in the races and it gives me two horses in the Derby Finals and I also have one in the Futurity Finals.”

Go Wave Up North, 20:459, William Leech.

Pete Dubois pulled off a hat-trick Sunday with three wins, first with Bar None Ranches’ Meet An Angel, then with Bar None’s Ride to Glory by More than Ready out of Apex Princess by Deputy Minister, and finally with General Gabe. General Gabe is owned by Rick Bassett and Jeff and Baker Mason.

The dependable horse is by Congaree out of Blazing Hot by Irish River and was bred in Ontario by Adena Springs.

BEHIND THE STARTING GATE . . . After two weekends of the Fall Meet, Trevor Simpson has ridden 10 winners and Larris Allen has six . . . After a huge Saturday, Lyle Magnuson has moved to the top in the trainer’s standings with eight wins, and Peter Dubois, Leonard Bourne and Michael Braun have three apiece . . . Rick Wiest’s great Careless Hunter won a race in the middle of Saturday’s card, not and Alberta Bred run . . . The Alberta Bred purses were all around the $9,500 mark . . . William Leech and Norm Cuthbertson had winning efforts in the final two races Saturday . . . RMTC supported the Therapeutic Riding Centre Saturday with a dinner and auction on the RMTC third floor . . . Jockey Jose Roca suffered a collarbone injury during morning workouts and was scratched for all of Sundays races . . . The largest payout of the weekend came in Sundays fifth race when Smile Again Annie paid 67.00, 31.00 and 8.20 . . . Oh to have $5 across the board on that one . . . Don’t forget the annual Alberta Quarter Horse Racing Association’s yearling mixed sale and stallion service auction, the same weekend as the Futurity and Derby . . . The eighth and ninth race Sunday were both photo finishes, one won by, would you believe Lyle Magnuson, with Mack’s Gold Bullet, and the other by 87-year-old Stan Marks, with Excess Baggage . . .
