16 Nominate for 85th Running of Canadian Derby

Nominations for the 85th Running of the Canadian Derby were due on Wednesday, August 6, and when the dust had settled there were 16 names in the hat for the $200K acid test to be run on Saturday, August 16, at Northlands Park.

Can The Man, winner of the $100K Affirmed Stakes, at Santa Anita - in early June, was thrown into the mix by trainer Tim Rycroft. His most recent works have taken place at Los Alamitos, under trainer Bob Baffert, but after a dismal 5th place finish in the $500K Los Alamitos Derby, on July 5, the Canadian Derby could be a great spot to find himself returning to the winners circle.

Edison was a $950K purchase last season and after scoring as the odds on favourite in the Harry Jeffrey Stake at Assiniboia Downs, on July 16, trainer Robertino Diodoro will try to make it back-to-back Canadian Derby wins after his dream run with Broadway Empire in 2013.

Local favourites include Western Canada/Count Lathum winner The Spinmeister for trainer Rob Chabot, while veteran trainer Joan Petrowski will send out Go Max who's been knocking on the door in all three 'road to the Canadian Derby' stake tests, this season, at Northlands Park.

Private Money Game was second best in the most recent Count Lathum and appears to be rounding into form - so be looking for him to be taking a shot at the big pot on the 16th. Other nominees include Awesome Nugget, Consecrate, Hillside Select, Irish You Well, Lint Law, Off The Top, On Andy's Advice, Remembertobreathe, Shootitinthebush, Unstoppable Colby and Wilko Rum.
