With sixteen names in the hat, for potential Canadian Derby starters, here's a closer look at this year's list of nominees for Alberta's Grade III stake.

Awesome Nugget for trainer Tom Rycroft... Winner of a maiden claimer at Northlands Park and a 5th place finisher in the Count Lathum as the longest shot on the board. He'd be an extreme long shot once again should he decide to chase after this Derby.

Can The Man conditioned by Tim Rycroft... He had back to back stake victories at Santa Anita before finishing 5th in the Los Alamitos Derby. This colt loves to be on or near the lead and it could be his Derby to win or lose. Hopefully he doesn't scare the competition away.

Consecrate for Greg Tracy... She's been everywhere man! Del Mar, Santa Anita, Hollywood, Golden Gate and now Northlands Park. A winner of the Northlands Oaks by almost a dozen lengths - she's a very nice filly that will likely choose to run against the girls in the Sonoma on Saturday.

Edison trained by Robertino Diodoro... A $950K purchase last year. Three wins from four outings this season makes him the real deal, Diodoro wants his second straight Derby after crushing with Broadway Empire in 2013; Edison just wants to win!

Go Max for Joan Petrowski... This son of War Pass loves to battle. Just one win from nine career starts, but he's always in the hunt. Joan is closing in on 1000 training victories and she'd love to add another Derby win to her total after scoring with Toccetive in 2012.

Hillside Select for trainer Jim Penney... Winner of a maiden claiming event at Hastings in mid-June. Coming in for the Derby would be a huge step up in class for this guy. Is he ready to face the big dogs? He's never seen stake action before.

Lintlaw for veteran trainer Floyd Arthur... Has a win and two seconds from four tries at the Allowance level this year in Edmonton. He's a good fit for the Derby and would not look out of place at all should he decide to go for it.

Off The Top for Rob Anderson... He's winless in 2014, but this B.C. invader has been 2nd best in his last three - including runner-up finishes in the Chris Loseth and the B.C. Cup Stellar's Jay Handicap at Hastings.

On Andy's Advice trained by Wally Pugh... Had 'out of the money' finishes in both the Ky Alta and the Manitoba Derby. His one win came in a maiden claimer at Laurel Park. It would be a tough task for this guy should he try his luck in the 'Run for the Daisies'.

Private Money Game for Linda Kropius... Already twelve starts in 2014, including a win and two seconds though the month of July against Allowance types and stake competition at Northlands Park. His willingness to compete puts him in with a shot.

Remembertobreathe trained by Sylvea Gregory... This B.C. invader trailed and rallied for 4th in the Chris Loseth as the second choice on the tote board. His current form shows he's a contender against the better three-year-olds in Western Canada.

Shootitinthebush for Robertino Diodoro... He's the new track record holder at a mile in Grande Prairie after scoring in 1:37.4 to capture a stake there on July 20. With five wins in his last six, against 'B Track' types, he'd be facing much tougher in this acid test.

The Spinmeister trained by Rob Chabot... Victorious in the Westerner, came up a little flat in the Ky Alta and then rebounded to a convincing win in the Count Lathum at Northlands Park. Should be a local hopeful/favourite in this year's edition of the Derby.

Unstoppable Colby for Robertino Diodoro... A third nominee for Diodoro. Has the one maiden special weight win coming at Oaklawn in February. Only showing one start in the last three months, but he does show three bullet works at Canterbury over the last month.

Wilko Rum trained by Wally Pugh... A second Pugh nominee and a 4th place finisher in the Manitoba Derby. Two career wins and never worse than 5th in ten career starts. His consistency to get money every time out, should put him in the hunt to get a piece of this pie.

What horses are likely to run in this year's Derby? Of course this is just speculation, but we could be looking at a field of ten.
