Backstretch Foundation Newsletter – July/August 2013

The Backstretch Foundation (previously known as the Chaplaincy Board) is a non-profit organization made up of a group of volunteers from the backstretch that get together to discuss how to provide a better quality of life possible for all backstretch workers. Backstretch workers would include anyone that makes their living as a Horse Racing Alberta licensee.

Racing at Alberta Downs – There will be flat Turf racing as well as harness racing at Alberta Downs on August 4

Backstretch Baseball Tournament – August 6th at Borden Park diamonds. Deadline for entries is August 2nd – 10 players constitute a team and each team must have 3 ladies. Lunch will start at 11:00 am and the ball must drop for the first game at 12:00. Come on over, have some lunch and cheer for your favorite team!

HBPA Annual General Meeting – August 13

th 5:30 pm at the Northlands Park Sky Paddock. All members are encouraged to attend. Sandwiches and non-alcoholic beverages will be served.

Canadian Derby Golf Classic - will be held Thursday August 15

th at the Raven Crest Golf and Country Club, 251-153 Avenue Edmonton. Shot gun start at 1:30pm. Registration fee is $120.00. Your fee includes your green fee, cart, goody bag, steak dinner, and prizes. Entries will be taken with Jason Teague at 780-471-7275 or at the HBPA office in Edmonton.


Powder Puff Derby – at Northlands Park on September 14th. This race is for women only that have never rode in an official race, to ride during the racing card at Northlands. The ladies who will be riding are: Twylla Bensmiller, Kirsty Luft-Nault, Jill Klubi, Crystal Leriger, Amanda Dixon, Jennifer Shafer, Diana Feuerhelm and Also Eligible Colleen Ellefson. An official charity will be announced soon for funds raised.

Saturday August 31

st racing has been cancelled due to a corresponding event at Northlands.

Stopwatch café – Every Saturday morning from 8:00-9:30 am Northlands will be hosting "Stopwatch café" in front of the paddock theatre on the tarmac. Come to enjoy some coffee and pastries and join in on the conversation about the horses and their people!

Dental, eye, and hearing subsidies from HBPA are available. You must have held a HRA license for a minimum of 90 days to be eligible. Pick up forms from Theresa Sealy.

The Learning Center is open weekdays 12:00-5:00, and race days 11:00-4:00. The Learning Center offers 5 computer stations with printer, wi-fi, fax services, library area, games, and puzzles!
