Alberta Breeders Fall Classic - Sept. 19

This weekend, Northlands will host the annual Alberta Breeders’ Fall Classic. For 19 years the successful partnership with the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society has celebrated the best of Alberta Thoroughbred racing industry. What used to be one special day dedicated to top stakes action has quickly evolved into an entire weekend steeped in Alberta pride.

Saturday afternoon will showcase seven thrilling stakes events totaling $350K. Each division will have their own dedicated race and a chance to shine as they compete for the winner’s share of a $50,000 purse.

The Sturgeon River Stakes will feature the top two year old Alberta Bred Fillies in the province. This years list of nominations includes 10 young hopefuls representing 7 different trainers.

The Alberta Premier’s Futurity attracted an exciting 17 nominations for the two year old colt and gelding division.

The three year old fillies will compete in the prestigious 1 mile Alberta Oaks, and the boys in the storied Beaufort Stakes.

The Red Diamond Express is a highlight race on the day featuring the only classic sprint for older horses. This years nominations included a filly among 10 colts and geldings.

The Fall Classic Distaff is a handicap stakes for fillies and mares three years old and up and is featured over 1 1/16 miles and attracted only six hopefuls this year.

The Alberta Breeders Handicap could be the most competitive race on the day with ten very solid veterans nominated to compete in this classic.

In addition to showcasing the top local talent on track, the ‘Made in Alberta Marketplace’ will be featured on the day to highlight top Alberta talents, vendors and trades.

Sunday, September 20, Northlands Expo will host the Annual Alberta Thoroughbred Sales Breakfast at 10am followed by the sale commencing at 1pm. Alberta Breeders’ Fall Classic marks the most anticipated event on the race calendar for   the men and women who dedicate their lives to this industry.
