The Canadian Derby is now in the record books with big congratulations to the connections of Alberta owned and Trained filly Academic!   We now we have the Alberta Breeders Fall Classic to look forwardto.

  • Best Dressed pony person competition will again be held on Alberta Fall Classic Day!  Prizes will be loaded credit cards.  Theme is “Fall in Alberta”
  • Alberta Fall Classic luncheon will be hosted by Don and Sue Danard in the paddock theatre for all owners, trainers, and grooms of horses entered to run in Fall Classic stakes September 19th.  Passes will be available from the HBPA office.  Thank you to Don and Sue for their generosity once again.
  • CTHS (Alberta Division) Thoroughbred Sale - Sunday, September 20th, Northlands Park EXPO Centre Hall A, Edmonton at 1:00.  The CTHS is offering a complimentary breakfast on Sunday morning at 10:00 am with viewing to follow!  For more information call the CTHS office at 403-229-3609.

  • Congratulations to Exercise Rider/Jockey Graduate Brandon Duchaine on winning the All Apprentice Jockey Challenge in Warsaw on August 23rd!  Brandon did us proud representing Canada, Horse Racing Alberta, and Olds College!  Brandon will be making his start as an apprentice at Northlands Park in September.
  • Congratulations to the New HBPA board of Directors – (Owners) – Brian Bygrave, Norman Castiglione, Rod Cundy, Don Danard, Curtis Landry, Linda Smith, and Steve Smith. (Trainers) – Rod Cone, Joan Petrowski, Tim Rycroft, and Craig Smith.
  • Nominations for the Alberta Breeders' Fall Classic races close on Wednesday, September 9th.  If you are planning on entering a horse in the Alberta Breeders' Fall Classic, please contact the CTHS Alberta office by message or email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We would like to write some "Road to the Fall Classic" short profiles on entries. Please provide contact information and the Alberta bred that you are entering.
  • Starting this year any Canadian Bred yearling that passed through the CTHS BC sale, the CTHS Alberta sale, or CTHS Manitoba sale in 2015 will be eligible for the restricted Sales Stakes in any of the provinces starting in 2016. Each of these horses will be eligible for $300,000 in Sales Stakes purses based on 2015 purse levels (purses for any of restricted Sales Stakes may be adjusted on a yearly basis).


  • Any employers interested in hiring an Olds College student next year, please see Theresa Sealy for details and get your name on a list.
  • The Olds College Exercise Rider Program will be looking for borrowed horses for their upcoming session in January 2016.  For more information see Theresa Sealy.
  • Anyone who may be interested in taking the upcoming sessions of the college racetrack programs, get your applications in before September 15th.  There are scholarships available on “”.  For more information see Theresa Sealy.  The student evaluation days for entry are October 5th and 6th at Olds College.
  • Dental, eye, and hearing subsidies from HBPA are available.  You must have held a HRA license for a minimum of 90 days to be eligible.  Pick up forms from Theresa Sealy.  Your applications must be in by October.
