Changes to the Drug and Alcohol Policy

August 23, 2019 - After consulting with horse racing industry stakeholders and researcing best practices in other jurisdictions, the Horse Racing Alberta (HRA) Board of Directors has approved changes to the Rules Governing Horse Racing in Alberta effective September 1, 2019.

There are three main changes that have been made to the Policy:

  • Adoption of screening for Drug and Alcohol will take effect September 1, 2019;
  • HRA has determined what is considered a safety-sensitive position;
  • HRA has determined testing protocols for jockeys/drivers, safety sensitive positions and all other persons.

The HRA will continue to work with industry participants as the new policy is implemented for the upcoming race season.
