Stakes Races Galore in Eleven Race Sunday

Sunday at Evergreen Park truly had a race for everyone, as there were eleven races on the card to help make up for the two rained-out days the previous weekend.

The highlight of the day was the Grande Prairie Derby, with local trainer Randy Hudson reigning supreme on," Chilcotin Hill".

Jockey Andrew Wright was on board for the victory and after opening up a huge lead, hung on by a half length over challenger, "Wilko's Agreement", who was closing with every stride.  The Rod Cone-trained horse ridden by Rey Williams, made the journey from Edmonton to try and capture the Derby prize and came oh so close.

In the Filly & Mares stakes race the unbeatable, "Lady Amelia", trained by Garry Marks and ridden by Martin Ortiz, picked up their third stakes win in a row.  Another Marks-trained horse, "Some Gave All", finished off the Marks exactor and was ridden by Blandford Stewart.  Both horse are owned by Gordon Howg.

In the Quarter Horse world, the Peace Country Derby was highlighted with first and second place finishes for trainer, William Leech, and owner, Charles Stojan.  "Stripsteak", won the race from the eight hole with Alejandro Hernandez on board, while stablemate, "True Copy", also owned by Stojan, was ridden to a second-place finish by jockey Ricardo Moreno.

This upcoming weekend, all the buzz is about the Alberta Derby, with a full field of eight competing for over fifty thousand dollars in purse money.  This is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested Derby races ever.

It should be a great weekend of racing and we'll see you at the races.
