Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) Neurological Disease
An outbreak of EHV-1 neurological disease has been confirmed at a private stable in DuPage County, Illinois, USA. At least eight horses have been reported affected of which two have had to be euthanased. The neuropathogenic strain of EHV -1 has been implicated. An additional horse on the premises developed a fever and was also confirmed virus positive. The premises is under quarantine restrictions until further notice.
Additional cases of EHV-1 neurological disease have been reported at Sunland Park Racetrack in New Mexico, where 28 horses have been confirmed positive for the neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1. These horses are located at 17 different barns at the track. At this point, the number of horses euthanased from the disease totals four. No horses are currently permitted in or out of Sunland Park Racetrack.
