“Alberta’s Top Open Pacers” - Game On At Century Downs!

When last seen on the racetrack, Who Doesnt dominated the Open Pace at Northlands Park winning by three lengths on December 27, 2014.

The 2014 AB Horse Of The Year was given a brief break following that win, but the six-year-old son of Mach Three returned in style on Sunday, April 26th at Century Downs Racetrack, winning the $10,500 Open Pace by three lengths in a very impressive mile of 1:53.3 over the talented Blue Eyed Cowboy and veteran Timberline Court

Driver Travis Cullen settled Who Doesnt into the three hole off the gate behind Comes Home First and Timberline Court but wasted no time in pulling his star pupil (known as Dewey) first over just past the quarter and cleared at the half.  Dewey was up by three lengths in a 27.2 third quarter and continued to cruise down the homestretch for the victory.  Blue Eyed Cowboy followed the cover and gave a solid effort for second while Timberline Court came out on top in a photo finish for third over Comes Home First.

The 1:53.3 winning time on a track rated good is the fastest time so far at Century Downs Racetrack.  This was the 13th win in a row and 23rd lifetime win for Who Doesnt who now has $176,280 banked for his owners Travis, Jeanne, Kenneth and Jodie Cullen.

Who Doesnt loves to win races which he shows each and every time he competes.  But in addition, to Who Doesnt Alberta is sporting a number of extremely talented Open pacers this year.

One very gifted four-yr-old to mention is Blue Eyed Cowboy. Blue was the 2013 AB Two-Yr-Old Champion and the 2014 AB Three-Yr-Old Champion.  He is the son of Brandons Cowboy out of the Artsplace mare Eiclarls Blue Eyes.  Blue has 12 wins in only 30 lifetime starts and has a mark of 1:52 along with lifetime earnings of $187,704.  Blue is big and bold with a ton of speed, he is owned and trained by top AB horseman Rod Starkewski and driven by Bill Tainsh Jr.  Watch for this audacious horse to mature over the year and be very competitive in this top class of horses.

We also have Comes Home First joining the Open ranks this year.  Comes Home First has a ton of accolades to his resume.  He’s won several AB Sires Stakes and was second in the 2014 Western Canada Pacing Derby.  Comes Home First has a bank role of $164,639 and wears a mark of 1:52.2.  He’s trained by Lance Ward and owned by the JJJ Stables of BC.  Driver Phil Giesbrecht will be his regular pilot.  Look for this gutsy horse to be competitive week in and week out.

Also returning is the 2012 Alberta Horse of the Year Timberline Court.  The now 10 yr-old has a resume that speaks for itself.  Timber is just shy of $400,000 in lifetime earnings and has a mark of 1:51.3.  This classy son of With Held out of the Artsplace mare Bon Temps knows the road to the winner’s circle.  His record speaks volumes with 39 wins, 25 seconds and 14 thirds.  Give this horse time to reach top form again and he will show his strength and character.  This veteran is trained and driven by top horseman Gerry Hudon.

Two additional pacers that also deserve mentions are both Ghost Pine andPremium Attaction

Ghost Pine is the flashy looking speedy son of Badlands Hanover and has a mark of 1:51.3.  This winner of 11 of 30 lifetime starts thus far in his career certainly has the ability to be a top horse here in Alberta.  Ghosty looks the part and comes from a good racing family. His dam Just Saucy was a top racing mare here in Alberta with earnings of $269,400. Look for his breeding to come out this year.  Ghosty is trained and driven by O’Brien Award winner Kelly Hoerdt.

Premium Attaction is now bigger, stronger and more mature at the age of five.  He sports some great credentials as well with winnings of just over $229,000 and a mark of 1:52.1.  At two Attaction won the $75,000 Two-yr-old AB Sires Stakes Super Finals along with numerous Alberta stakes including seven AB Sires Stakes competitions.  Attaction resides in the Hudon Stable.  With the right trip this gifted son of Clintons Cigar can step up in this Open field.

It remains to be seen if we will see the BC’s top Open pacers make the trip and land on Alberta soil.  Top BC pacer Sterling Cooper is fast and furious.  BC also has Beren Hanover, another bodacious horse who is the son of the late world champion Rocknroll Hanover.  Another is Blue Star Admiral.  These are just to mention a few.

The Open Pace will be contested on Mother’s Day this Sunday in the first race at Century Downs RacetrackPost time is 2:00pm sharp! The winning driver will hand out beautiful flowers to some of the special mothers that came out to watch.

One thing is for certain, these extremely competitive, tough Alberta Open pacers will put on show for you.  Come out and cheer on your favorite horse and driver... you will not be disappointed!
