Alberta Sires Stakes 'Super Final' Preview

by Sugar Doyle: Exclusive to

This Saturday the ‘harness racing spotlight’ will on the Alberta Sires Stakes Super Finals taking place at Northlands Park, in Edmonton. The two and three-year-olds will battle in four separate $75,000 Super Finals - along with four $20,000 Super Final Consolation races - as part of a twelve dash card that gets under way at 1:00 pm.

The following is a preview of some of the 'key players' taking part in the four $75,000 main events.

2 YO Filly Super Final - Race 8

Nighttraintovegas [5-2] has 5 wins and 3 place finishes - good for $51,000 - from 8 starts in 2013, but has drawn the outside post 8 in the rookie filly test. The Raggs To Riches camp are pretty high on their filly, Triple Action [2-1], from post 2... “Nighttraintovegas has been the one to beat, but we want this one - to possibly claim the Alberta Bred ‘Filly of the Year’ award,” said one part of the ownership group. “Triple Action is a small filly, but she’s got a big motor. She can race on the lead or come from behind... We like our chances there.”

Expect Blue Star Escape [9-2] and Sweet Sugar [4-1] to be factors there as well.

2 YO C & G Super Final - Race 9

Blue Eyed Cowboy [2-1](9 – 4-1-1, $27,498, 1:53.3M – track record @ AD) has come a long way in recent starts. “He was sick early in the stakes season, but he’s blossomed into a fine two-year-old” says owner/trainer Rod Starkewski. “We had his half-sister, so we took a look at him - at last year’s yearling sale - and we were able to take him home for just $1700! He’s been a real dandy for us.”

Comes Home First [3-1] scratched sick in his latest, but the force has been strong with this one all season long. “He’s a nice big colt and I’m not really concerned about the outside post,” says trainer Lance Ward. “We could be looking at an off-track on Saturday too and that doesn’t worry me either. We should get a good chunk of this one.”

Others to think about include Pass The Port [12-1] and Cigar Party [6-1].

3 YO Filly Super Final - Race 10

This is a very interesting tilt... Crackers Hot Shot [2-1] has been doing it and doing it well all year - a winner of over $100K in 2013, but she was put to the test last time out and after parking through an opening quarter of 27.4, she faded through the late stages and finished 4th - on a placing - as the 9-5 fave. “The recall may have taken the sting out of her,” says owner/trainer Rod Starkewski. “And that was the first time she’d ever shipped in to race as well,” he continued. “We’ll be expecting her ‘A’ game on Saturday.”

River Blues [3-1] was the 15-1 upset winner of last week’s $54,500 Marquis Final... “She was a big surprise for us last week,” says trainer Lance Ward. “The potential is there for her to work out an even better trip this week and now we know that anything can happen with this group of fillies.”

Owners’ Blair Corbeil and Kelly Hoerdt have Emotions Run Wild [7-2] leavingfrom the outside post. She’s a winner of over $60K, in 2013, and has shown that she’s a serious threat - anytime against this group.

Other possibilities in this wide open contest includeCenalta Fireworks, Kiss My Crouper, Barona Lilac, G Ts Selene and Blue Star West...

3 YO C & G Super Final - Race 11

The favourites draw the outside, of the gate, in the $75,000 glamour boy test. Farthest out is Play Me Right [2-1] who appears to be peaking at just the right time, but he’ll have to work a little harder for it this week. "I was a little disappointed with the draw, but I was so impressed with him last week," said co-owner Jodi Loftus. "He owes us nothing... He's far met our expectations... He's just getting better and better and we're so proud of him. It's been an exciting year!"

Premium Attaction [5-2] has over $190,000 earned in his two seasons, at the races, but an early break - last time out - had him never in it. This would be a great time to bounce back... And Blue Star Admiral [5-1] doesn’t look out of place at all. He’s been factor all year and could be your dark one here.

Value players in this group may be Outlaw Falcon {12-1] andTip Top Tap [6-1].
