Bertrand's Sunshine Beach goes after Meadowlands Pace

Edmonton's Diane Bertrand will, once again, chase after the big money as her colt Sunshine Beach starts in this Saturday's $635,750 Meadowlands Pace, at Meadowlands Racetrack, in New Jersey. After finishing 5th in the $1M North America Cup, on June 15th, her colt is coming off two straight victories - including a life time best this past Saturday night.

An elimination heat, on Saturday, served as a great prep for the 3 YO son of world champion Somebeachsomewhere. Starting from post 5 - Sunshine Beach, in rein to George 'the Minister of Speed' Brennan, would park to an opening half in 53 seconds flat before assuming command. The 3-5 favourite would then take it from there - holding off a late surge from Odds On Equuleus (John Campbell) who would finish second by a neck. Time of the mile was an eye-popping 1:48 flat!!

Bertrand shares ownership of Sunshine Beach with Hudson Standardbred Stable and Conrad Leber . Mark Steacy conditions the colt, who is now 4 for 6 this season, with $139,000 earned in 2013.

“Mark said he was lazy and he was very lazy, so I didn’t get him on the bit,” Brennan said. “I just let him do what he had to do. I watched his race and he came from the back at Mohawk. That just doesn’t work here. I knew I had to be up close, not necessarily on the lead, but I wound up there.”

The colt has never been this good - with his last five miles being paced in 1:49.3 or better. He'll be the 3-1 second choice behind 6-5 race favourite - and currently touted as the biggest star in harness racing - Captaintreacherous this Saturday.

Best of luck - one more time Diane!
