Northlands' Chris Roberts would be at the podium to provide the commentary as eleven nominees would be in the box to run for the $200K Grade III stake on Saturday. "It's power, glory and victory," said Roberts of the Derby. "It's not just a race... It's the day of the champion!"
The first name out of the box would be Lintlaw for trainer Floyd Arthur and it would be post position seven chosen by the connections. Fan-favourite jockey Ismael Mosqueira will guide what could be the upset special of this year's Derby for owners Excel Farms, James and Alice Sapara, along with Wayne and Oksana Tymchak.
"His breeding says he can go the distance," says veteran trainer Floyd Arthur on Lintlaw. "He's given me every indication he can go the route."
Installed as the 4th longest shot on the morning line, at 15/1, Lintlaw has been just missing this season against Allowance types at Northlands Park. "He's been an honest horse and he's very rateable," continued Arthur. "That's key for going a long distance like the Derby. Personally I wouldn't put one in there unless I thought we had a legitimate shot... You can't win it - if you're not in it!" A calm, cool and collected Arthur then adds "I have a feeling things may go right for this fella on Saturday."
Arthur had never been a fan of the 126 lbs that the three-year-olds were asked to once carry over the mile and three-eighths affair. "I was always against the heavy weight at that distance," he stated. "Now I'm quite pleased to see the weight has dropped to 122 lbs in recent years."
Mosqueira would ride For Cash to a 4th place finish in the 2013 edition of the 'Run for the Daisies' and he comes back this year feeling pretty good about his chances. "I know this horse well," he says. "I've been on him most every start of his career. Last year he was a stud and now this season he races as a gelding - I truly believe that has made a difference and it's allowed me to manage him better on the racetrack."
Mosqueira is a big fan of post 7 for this race. "We were happy to draw first and select the 7... That will allow me to find a good spot throughout," he says. "We'll look to settle in or around mid-pack and hope for some pace to chase. He knows when we're turning for home and he'll show his best in the late stages."
What about the large crowd, the noise, the excitement on track from a jockey's perspective on Derby day? "For me... I put the goggles down over my eyes and it's just me and my horse. I'm looking after him and he's looking after me. The large crowd is nice, but me and my horse will be focused and we'll be tuning all that out."
Be well aware of the 7 Lintlaw @ 15/1 this coming Saturday in Derby 85 at The Park. If you like value - then you have to like this horse!
