Salsa Express stays hot with another win at Northlands Park

Salsa Express made it three wins in a row as the eight year old mare won again, taking the $20,900 featured event on Saturday’s card.  Salsa Express and Rico Walcott sat back in third early on as Clairesmiezie went out to battle with Silver City Sizzle early on through an opening quarter mile of :23.80 seconds.  Clairesmiezie snuck away as the field came into the final turn, but Walcott unleashed Salsa Express on the outside and they came rolling late getting up to win by a neck.  Clairesmiezie finished second ahead of Tempered Sapphire who ran third.

Salsa Express completed the six and one half furlongs in 1:20.00 and paid $3.90 for a winning $2 win bet.  It was the 21st career win for Salsa Express and her thirteenth triumph at Northlands Park.  The win also pushed Salsa Express up over the $300,000 earnings mark for her magnificent career for owners K6 Ranches Ltd. and Ed Walsh.

Big congratulations go out to trainer Ernie Keller who has trained this mare to four wins and three second place finishes from eight starts this season as an eight year old!  Truly an accomplishment.

Proud Victor makes his Northlands Debut a winning one

Proud Victormade the journey over the Rocky Mountains to come to Northlands Park and race on Saturday in a $19,900 allowance event.  Proud Victor was one of the top two year olds in Western Canada last season for trainer Greg Tracy and he’s continued to race well as a three year old.

Weekend Wrap Up 9/11-9/14

Saturday Proud Victor was close up early in the six and one half furlong event and stalked early leader Cattle Hauler through an opening quarter in :23 seconds flat.  Fernando Perez gave Proud Victor a little more rein as they went down the backstretch and he made a decisive move after the lead.  Risky Call and Rafael Zenteno loomed up on their outside as an immediate threat, but Proud Victor just kept finding more on the lead and opened up late to win by a length and a quarter.  Risky Call finished up in second with Hardly Forgotten running third.  Hardly Forgotten was disqualified though and placed fourth behind Igotadeal who was moved up to third after Hardly Forgotten interfered with Igotadeal on the final turn.

Proud Victor has now won five of ten starts in his career and his earnings jumped up over $155,000 for owners Riversedge Racing Stables

Amanda Dixon and Taylor’s Tale take the Powder Puff Derby

One of the most exciting races of the weekend wasn’t even to be found in the Daily Racing Form.  Rather the Powder Puff Derby featured seven Northlands exercise riders and trainers all riding to benefit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.  The field of seven went six furlongs with Northlands Television Host Crystal Leriger taking advantage of her inside post-position draw and cutting the corner to take the lead into the first turn.  Twyla Bensmiller and Jill Klubi sat second and third as they ran past the opening quarter mile.

Amanda Dixonand Taylor’s Tale spotted the leaders probably ten to twelve lengths as they ran down the backstretch (I’m guessing, I don’t think Equibase did a chart for the race.)  Leriger and Wild Sassy Syn had the lead as the field came into the homestretch, but Amanda Dixon and Taylor’s Tale had all the momentum as they inhaled the competition on the far turn and swept to the lead and drew clear down the lane to win with ease, probably by seven lengths or so.  You Play You Pay with Kristi Luft-Nault finished up in the second spot.

Jockey Jorge Espitia also donated his earnings on Saturday to the cause and over $12,000 was raised by everyone.  What a fantastic event and congratulations to everyone who participated!
