Backstretch Foundation Newsletter -August/September 2013

The Canadian Derby is now in the record books with big congratulations to the Alberta owned and trained Broadway Empire! Congratulations to owner’s Bob Butz, Randy Howg, and Rick Running Rabbit and Trainer Robertino Diodoro. We now we have the Alberta Breeders Fall Classic to look forward to.

Coming Events

Farewell to Sugar Doyle – September 3 rd in the Sky Paddock at 6:00 pm. Come and join Sugar and friends to say goodbye. Sugar is moving on up to the next step in his career. We will miss him greatly, but let’s celebrate in his accomplishment! Hors d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar available.

The final Trainers test for the year will be on September 5th at 6:00 pm. If you are still planning to write, please contact Theresa Sealy ASAP.

Backstretch Fishing Derby – September 8 th – 10th at Slave Lake. See Andy Scott for details.

Celebrating Alberta – Equine Art show, made in AB wine and cheese tasting on Friday September 20 th, 5:00 pm in the playbook lounge Northlands Park. Come meet jockey Russell Baze , Horse Racing’s Hall of fame and record holder of most wins in North America! Tickets are $25.00 each available from the CTHS at 403-229-3609.

Complimentary Backstretch Breakfast will be held Saturday September 21 st in the Northlands outdoor paddock from 8:00 - 10:00 am. All HRA licensees are welcome to attend. Courtesy of the HRA Backstretch Foundation.

Best Dressed pony person competition will again be held on Fall Classic Day! Prizes will be loaded credit cards for the top 3 winners and participation prizes for all!

 

Alberta Fall Classic luncheon will be hosted by Don and Sue Danard in the paddock theatre for all owners and trainers of horses entered to run in Fall Classic stakes September 21st. Thank you to Don and Sue for their generosity once again.

CTHS (Alberta Division) Thoroughbred Sale - Sunday, September 22nd, Northlands Park EXPO Centre Hall B, Edmonton at 1:00. The CTHS is offering a complimentary breakfast on Sunday morning at 10:00 am with viewing to follow! For more information call the CTHS office at 403-229-3609.

Thanksgiving Dinner for all licensed backstretch personnel will be held in the Backstretch Kitchen on September 25 th from 4:00-7:00 pm. This is a come and go event and will be free for all HRA backstretch licensees courtesy of the HBPA of Alberta.

Congratulations to Backstretch Baseball Champs of 2013 was "The Wonderfuls" coached by Eddie Martinez.

Congratulations to Ismael Mosquiera and Jess Friesen on the birth of their baby girl Mikayla.

Get well wishes go out to Jerry Murphy who is in the hospital fighting an infection.

Condolences go out to the family of Jeff Coady. Jeff Coady, owned and operated one of the largest and most respected winner’s circle photography companies in racing, Coady Photography has contracts at more than 20 tracks in North America. He will live on in his images of the sport that can be found adorning racetrack walls, in offices of owners and fans, and in the dormitories of stable hands.

The Olds College Exercise Rider Program will be looking for borrowed horses for their upcoming session in January. For more information see Theresa Sealy.

Anyone who may be interested in taking the upcoming sessions of the college racetrack programs, get your applications in before September 13th. There are scholarships available to horsemen interested. For more information see Theresa Sealy.

Dental, eye, and hearing subsidies from HBPA are available. You must have held a HRA license for a minimum of 90 days to be eligible. Pick up forms from Theresa Sealy. Your applications must be in by October.
