ABFC Profiles - Jerry Robertson

It’s people like Jerry Robertson that make you fall in love with Alberta Thoroughbred Racing over and over again.

Since 1985 Jerry has been training a manageable stable of competitive horses, never with the flashiest of pedigrees or backed by the biggest of bank rolls. And year after year she continues to impress with an incredible record, top win percentage and her contagious spirit and tenacity.

It’s been said that ‘you need to be lucky to be good and need to be good to be lucky’ and for 30 years Jerry Robertson has been working hard to make her own good luck. You would be hard pressed to find a better care taker, better person, or anyone who is more dedicated to her horses than this devoted trainer.

Although not comfortable receiving accolades, she is very generous with her compliments. Jerry doesn’t mince words in a recent interview about the importance of loyal owners in the industry. She shares her gratitude for her amazing team of supporters over the years, and specifically about a certain gentleman who has high hopes on Alberta Breeders’ Fall Classic Day.

Mitch Klimove was a fixture in the racing game long before Jerry was born. “I think Mitch has owned horses since the beginning of time,” she laughs. “He is the best owner, and the best man you will ever meet,” she continues singing his praises.

Mitch purchased a promising yearling filly just before his 90th birthday. Conferring with his intended conditioner on a name for the young horse, Jerry suggested ‘Almost Ninety’ in honor of his great milestone. Two wins and 12 starts later, this multiple stakes placed filly has become a barn favorite and a top choice in the Alberta Oaks on Saturday afternoon. Almost Ninety has developed a sweet spot for her devoted owner and a sweet tooth for the scotch mints feeds her every visit.

With a win on Alberta Breeders’ Fall Classic Day, Almost Ninety’s career earnings would jump to almost ninety...thousand.

The Alberta Oaks is just one of seven thrilling $50K stakes highlights on an 11 race card Saturday, September 19. Come join the fun at Northlands Park Racetrack and Casino!
