Trained by Rob Chabot, Keene On Demand would get the perfect Quincy Welch ride in this one... Welch would guide him wide into the first turn for position, from post 10, before shooting up the inside to confront the leader coming out of turn number two. It would be a 2 1/2 length win @ 5-1 over the pacesetter Clever Speed and Tricky Times.
The betting public got behind Lawyer Laurie @ 5-2 who was coming off a solid second place finish, to the promising For Cash, back on May 4th. The 3YO of Lawyer Ron would break slow and sit next to last before closing well to finish 4th. Clearly Lawyer Laurie wants more distance...
Riding doubles on the night were turned in by Raf Zenteno Jr. (Lynn's Foxie Lady and Ann Can) and Rico Walcott (Arctic Ceal and Swayze Road).
Other winners included Bett On Ruthie (Ismael Mosqueira), Northern Gunney (Amie Pooli) and Social Charm (Tony Maragh).
'Awesome' night for B.C. invader
The 30th Running of the $50,000 Wild Rose would go to B.C. invader Awesome Plan on Friday night. Owned by North American Thoroughbred Horse Company, the 4YO daughter of Takin It Deep would sit just off the pace, behind known-speedster Plethora, before taking the leader down in deep stretch for the win. Jorge 'The Specialist' Espitia would be aboard for trainer Dennis Terry in this - her 2nd win on the season and 6th career victory.
Plethora stayed on for second, with Claresmiezie finishing third, ahead of Tempered Saphhire, Caro's Song and race favourite Jaws N' Paws.
Nate Smith had the hot hands Friday night as he'd get the hat trick aboard the likes of Chattering Nikita (first 2YO winner in Alberta - 2013), Mountain Minister and Bonboni.
Apprentice rider Amie Pooli (Vision of Roses and Perky N Sweats) and jockey Jorge Espitia (Beau Diablo and Awesome Plan) would record doubles on the evening. Dancing At Dark (Rico Walcott) was the final winner on the night.
Silver Baubles 'over the top' in the Journal
A calm and cool Kyle 'K.C.' Carter would pilot Silver Baubles to victory in Saturday's 58th Running of the $50,000 Journal Handicap. "I just pushed the gas when I needed to and he took off," said Carter following the win.
Owned and bred by Bar None Ranches Ltd., and trained by Ron Grieves, the handsome chestnut son of Gilded Time, out of Silver Seven by Silver Deputy, would break sharply to lay just off the speed for Carter, as newcomer L.A. Weekend would set the early tempo into the first turn.
Down the backside it would be Wild About Chrome and Tiny Giant mounting three and four-wide challenges with Tiny Giant taking over at the 1/4 pole. Into the stretch it came down to Tiny Giant and the hard closing Silver Baubles with the latter prevailing by 1 1/4 lengths. Tiny Giant held second, with defending champion Commander completing the top three. Then it was Wild About Chrome, Ready racer, L.A. Weekend, Dougs Buddy and Minutesandtouches.
Carter would also strike with Grand Request and U Play U Pay for the triple. Leading Jjckey Rico Walcott also had the hat trick with Bourree, Rockport Street and Quite Contrary.
Other Saturday winners were Turf Elite (Ruben Lara), Bourbon Bon Bon (Eddy Matinez) and Bent Tune (Ismael Mosqueira).
Saturday’s handle was a very nice $285, 891.
