SUBJECT: CPMA Study - Mepivacaine

As part of an internal review, CPMA recently completed a study with respect to the elimination guidance in the 2011 Schedule of Drugs booklet for mepivacaine.

In this study, four horses were administered a single 300mg subcutaneous dose (injected into the tissue layer between the skin and the muscle) of mepivacaine. Blood and urine samples were then collected from the horses at various intervals.

The results showed that none of the horses tested in the study would have received a positive test at or beyond the elimination guideline of 48 hours.

Accordingly, the elimination guidelines for mepivacaine will remain unchanged in the 2016 edition of the booklet expected to be released shortly.
