Outlaw Gunpowder took full aim and captured the $49,800 ABSS Alberta Maverick Final for three-year-old colts and geldings this past Sunday afternoon at Alberta Downs.  The son of Smart Shark-Fox Valley Cherish took a new lifetime mark of 1:53.3 winning by three-quarters of a length.  Driven by Phil Giesbrecht, the winning colt left the gate from post four and settled in to the three-hole behind Sotally Tober (Jamie Gray) and Get Thereovernight (Keith Clark).  Sotally Tober hit the first quarter in 28.2 and continued to control the pace at the half and three quarters with fractions of 57.4 and 1:25.  Sitting fourth was the favorite Blue Eyed Cowbaoy (Bill Tainsh Jr) who came first up down the backstretch but struggle to advance.  The battle was on once they hit the long Alberta Downs homestretch with Outlaw Gunpowder shooting out from the three-hole to wear down the leader Sotally Tober.  Sotally Tober held on for second while Blue Eyed Cowboy kicked in late to sneak up for third.  Comes Home First (Jim Marino) was fourth while Cigar Party (Gerry Hudon) rounded off the top five.

Outlaw Gunpowder is owned and trained by the 2013 O’Brien Award winner Kelly Hoerdt.  Hoerdt shares ownership with Blair Corbeil of Beaumont.  The duo purchased the colt back on July 29th of this year from BC trainer Rick White.  The talented Outlaw Stable bred colt now has four lifetime wins and $51,122 in lifetime earnings.
