They say Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.  Well this was certainly true for Barona Mercedes on Saturday, August 23rd.  Freshly off a five length elimination win, the three-year-old daughter of Brandons Cowboy-Insurance Fee dominated the $51,300 AB Diamond Stakes final for three-year-old fillies with an impressive victory winning by three lengths and paced to a new lifetime mark of 1:53.1.  The 4-5 favorite left from post two.

Driver/trainer Kelly Hoerdt sent her to the lead off the gate and the duo hit the first quarter in 28.2.  They continued to control the race with fractions of 57.4 and 1:26 before pulling away down the homestretch.  Nighttraintovegas (Campbell) held on for second over a very fast closing Mothers Melody (Gray) who came third.

Barona Mercedes winning time of 1:53.1 was just two-fifths of a second off the divisional track record which is held by Phone Terror.  This was Barona Mercedes sixth win in just 10 lifetime starts and now boasts a bankroll of $54,797.  Heordt shares ownership with Amy Henry of Fort Saskatchewan and Blair Corbeil of Beaumont.

The winner paid $3.70 $2.10 $2.10.  The (2-9) Exactor paid $6.10 and the Triactor (2-9-4) paid $24.00 while the Superfecta (2-9-4-3) dished out $63.05.

Blue Eyed Cowboy Takes ABSS Marksman

Despite drawing post eight Blue Eyed Cowboy had no trouble capturing the $50,700 final of the AB Marksman for three-year-old colts and geldings on Sunday, August 24th at Alberta Downs.

With regular pilot Bill Tainsh Jr at the controls Blue Eyed Cowboy started his journey coming first up before the quarter.  The duo continued to grind through the half and battled for the lead with race favorite Comes Home First (Marino).   When they turned for home Blue Eyed Cowboy took the lead and didn’t look back.  This very talented son of Brandons Cowboy-Eicarls Blue posted a time 1:53.3 winning by over six lengths.   Son of Anarchy (Hennessy) came up the inside through the stretch to capture second place while the early breaker Sotally Tober (Gray) put in a very gutsy performance to capture third prize.   Painting The Wind (Redwood) stole fourth while Comes Home First faltered to fifth.

Blue Eyed Cowboy is trained and owned by Rod Starkewski.  He was purchased for $1700 in the 2013 ASHA Yearling Sale.  Blue Eyed Cowboy now has nine lifetime wins and $112,598 in lifetime earnings.
