GAME ON! There was no shortage of competitiveness in second race for the OPEN PACE at Alberta Downs this past Saturday afternoon. Flak Jacket came with his game face on for driver/trainer Jamie Gray. With the scratch of Mr. Saratoga and field down to four the “big horses” still put on a show.

“FAN APPRECIATION DAY”
MONDAY MAY 20TH

Off the gate Timberline Court could not make the front and had to duck into third behind Trust The Artist who took the pocket seat while Bill Tainsh Jr. with Sixdaysontheroad using the rail advantage had no thoughts of giving up the lead. Back behind them all was Gray patiently followed with his star pacer.

The opening quarter was a very soft 29.2. At the half in 58.4 Tainsh Jr. controlled the lead with Sixsdaysontheroad and seem to be in no hurry while waiting for challengers. Gerry Hudon with Timberline Court came first up at the ¾ pole while Flak Jacket followed his cover.

Driver Kelly Hoerdt had a ton of horse with Trust The Artist but stayed inside with nowhere to go. The race was on down the homestretch as Timberline Court was all out hunting down Sixsdaysontheroad while Flak Jacket continued to stay on his back. Gray timed Flak Jacket perfectly to come off his cover and blew by them all for the win 1:54.4.

This was Flak Jacket’s 18th career win and jumped his earnings up to $233,307. Driver Jamie Gray who was the 2013 AB Driver of the Year had 3 driving wins on the day which also included both Fly Bye Elly in race 10 and Outlaw I See Red in race 11 for trainer Joe Ratchford.

Saturday’s sixth race the 2012 AB 2yr-old Champion Filly Crackers Hot Shot was impressive despite overcoming the 8 post position in her 2013 debut by winning in 1.56.3 for owner/trainer Rod Starkewski.

Not having the support of the betting public she paid $30.70, $6.00 and $3.30. Cloud Nine from the Haining Stable was 2nd and Skade hit the board for 3rd for driver/trainer Kelly Hoerdt. The $2.00 Exactor 8-5 paid $213.80, the $2.00 Triactor 8-5-9 paid $274.50 while the $1.00 Superfecta paid $335.20.

Sunday’s card May 12th included back to back wins for 3 yr-old filly Glitteronthebeach in the 4th race for driver/trainer Travis Cullen who shares ownership with Keith Hannah along with Ronald & Jodie Cullen.

Glitteronthebeach won by 5Q lengths in a time of 1:57.4. The favorite paid $2.50 on the win. In the 5th Owner/trainer Alvin Jensen also had back to back wins with B R Money Matters for co-owner Bob Lappas.

The driver/trainer combination of Paul Davies and Rod Starkewski had a winning double with Farm Team in the 7th and Mjjz R Us in the 11th. Mjjz R Us paid nicely with $29.40, $11.00 and $4.10. Sunday’s handle at Alberta Downs was $25,186.
