Stake finals took off this weekend at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino with a great number of spectators and some very pleasing weather this late in our fall season.

The Alberta Marquis Final for three-year-old fillies made for a great race with an even better finish Saturday afternoon. Three of Alberta’s most talented fillies were all across the wire at the races end. Clearing the three quarter pole it was Keith Clark’s trainees Blue Star Texas, driven by Clark himself, and Cam Finish with Phil Giesbrecht battling down the home stretch for the win. Underestimating on the outside of them, a brush and a rush from Takeondaboys of veteran trainer Rod Hennessey’s. Takeondaboys accomplished her seventh victory lifetime out of 22 starts. Cam Finish of Clark’s had to settle for second, just getting nosed out in a photo for the win in a mile of 1.57. flat. Blue Star Texas was third, leaving the races favorite Fire Watch fourth. These four fillies will all be competing again in two weeks’ time with a few others in the Alberta Super Finals for three year-old fillies.

The Alberta Maverick Stake Final for three year-old colts and geldings made for another exciting race. Entering the race as the 17-1 shot with the tough outside post, Johhny Gun was first to cross the wire. Trained by Harold Haining and driven to victory by Jim Marino.  Rod Hennessey trained Outlawdeaconjim raced down the lane for the place position, with Paul Davies at the lines. Show pony was Withflyingcolors, steered and trained by Keith Clark.  The colts paced a mile of 1.56.0 and saw four equine athletes across the track for the races last quarter. These colts too along with others will be at it again in the Alberta Super Finals for three year-old colts and geldings.

The Alberta Super Finals are a much anticipated set of races that shed spotlight on our provinces most talented two and three-year-old harness horses. Grooms, Trainers, Owners and Drivers work hard and strive to have the opportunity to battle among fellow horsemen and horses alike to be the Super Final Champions. Century Down Racetrack and Casino along with the horsemen themselves invite all race fans to come take in the action October 31, 2015.
