Preview of Fathers' Day Weekend at RMTC

Looking for something different for Dad this weekend? How about taking in the horses races at the comfortable Rocky Mountain Turf Club! From the third floor's Champion's Room, to Bullys, to the lower grandstand area or out along the rail, there's an array of exciting entertainment in every location, and there'll be special treats for Dad this Father's Day.

Friday's race card kicks off at 6 p.m., allowing for dinner and the races, while Saturday and Sunday post time is 1:15 p.m.

There'll be six races Friday night, kicked off with a pair of 350-yard Quarter Horse dashes, and a featured fourth race covering seven furlongs.

Saturday the spotlight falls on the fifth race, the All Canadian Open Futurity, covering 300 yards with a guaranteed purse of $7,350.

The big Open Futurity features the following, by post position, horses, time in the trials, trainer and rider: 1. Two If By Sea, 16.090, Kurt Calton, Larris Allen; 2. Chad On Tappanzee, 16.572, Janice Sather, Ramon Saenz; 3. HRH Tres Royale, 16.143, Buckey Stockwell, Sean Evans; 4.

Saturday's card winds up with a pair of seven furlong runs, with trainer Terri Landecker back at the RMTC with Master's Bluff, running against the likes of Rick Wiest's Shhootitinthebush and Excess Baggage from Stan Marks.

The final race of the day has horses from Nellie Pigeau, Kevin Oberholtzer, Les Adams and Nolan Little Bear.

Sunday features the Alberta Bred Futurity Finals, which will cover 300 yards with a purse of $64,418. Also Sunday the 300-yard Alberta Bred Consolation Futurity will be held. This is the third race on the card and features a purse of $7,158. Among the top horses are Strawfly 109, Timber Legacy and Moon Lacker.

The final race of the weekend is the Open Stake, a seven furlong run with a purse of $8,500.

This race features some fan favourites, like Careless Hunter, Dubla Gold and the surprising Keene On Demand.

For those who like to bet on the rider rather than the horse, you might want to look to Trevor Simpson who has come on like Silky Sullivan, moving into first spot from way back, with 29 wins with three weekends to go. Next is line is last year's Spring Meet champion Larris Allen with 25 wins.

In the race for top trainer Riley Rycroft has stormed to within a single win of Lyle Magnuson.

Lyle has 17 wins while Riley has 16. Big William Leech is the top of the Quarter Horse trainer with eight wins to date.

There'll be live Dixieland jazz music, simulcasts from the top race tracks around North America, food and drinks, and the kiddies petting zoo and candy scramble.
