The Rocky Mountain Turf Club kicks off its Spring Meet this Saturday and Sunday with 16 quality races.
"It's great to see that our opening weekend features virtually all full fields, with no less than seven horses in a race but mostly eight," says RMTC CEO Max Gibb. "Because it's the first weekend of our Spring Meet the Thoroughbreds are going five furlongs and we'll have some important Quarter horse elimination races for the racing fans.
"Saturday, we have two 350-yard Bank of America Maiden Challenge Trails, with these maiden races always exciting. On Sunday we have a trio of important 350-yard Quarter horse sprints, as the All Canadian Open Derby trials lead off the Sunday card." Among the more than dozen jockeys on hand will be Tyler Walker, Juan Ramon Gonzales, Larris Allen and Valentino McBean.
Post time both days opening weekend is 1:15 p.m.
Saturday's featured eighth race has some veteran trainers taking their horses to the gate, including Pete Dubois with General Gabe, Norm Cuthbertson with Saronno, Laurie Ferguson with Whistle Cat and big Dennis Dorchester going to the gate with Real Heart, making the eight- horse field a deep one.
Top-ranked trainer Lyle Magnuson has five horses on Saturday's card and two in on Sunday.
And 86-year-old Stan Marks has Excess Baggage in action Sunday as well as Go For The Gold.
Saturday, he has Caesar's Son in the fifth race.
"It is really great to see so many of our top trainers in action this opening weekend," says Gibb.
"Allan Goodsell is back here at the RMTC and Janet Sather is back again, along with Angelle Carter. Jim Depew, from a long line of great Raymond horsemen is back again along with a slew of others our fans have come to rely on for quality horses.
"Besides the key Quarter horse races Saturday, knowledgeable race fans will enjoy our seventh race, featuring the great Dubla Gold, owned and trained by Pete Dubois. As well the equally majestic Careless Hunter, trained by the Wiest boys is entered while Lyle Magnuson has Mr.
Shorty and the training legend Stan Marks has Keepanosecrets." Besides the return of RMTC racing, race fans will also enjoy the simulcast races in the Champions Room on the third floor, along with live music, the Las Vegas-style slot and food and beverages in Bullys.
Rose Rossi will once agin have a great entertainment package lined up for the kids.
The RMTC Spring Meet continues each weekend through July 1 at Millarville and July 4-5 back in Lethbridge for the final weekend until the fall.
