The sun was shining and there wasn't a cloud in the sky, which made for a perfect day for the Alberta Derby. Evergreen Park put on an outstanding Derby Day buffet and the Derby Hats were in abundance.
The Derby itself featured a full field of eight horses and didn't disappoint the rail birds in attendance. "Regal Max", the "Max Forever" colt romped gate-to-wire, setting a new Evergreen Park track record at a mile and a sixteenth with a time of 1:44.23. Shamaree Muir did an exceptional job of stealing a fraction and having plenty left in the tank for the stretch run when challenged by Elige Bourne's, " Shimshine", ridden by Rico Walcott. Third place money went to the Tim Rycroft-trained, "Gem Alta", ridden by Rigo Sarmiento.
The secondary stakes race on Derby Day featured an upset with Mankumar Mohindee's, "Unstoppable Colby" just edging out "General Day", owned and trained by Lyle Magnuson. Juan Apango was on board "Unstoppable Colby", and turned in an outstanding ride to edge out the one-to-two favourite.
The lineups were huge and the wagering was in full force. Whether you had the winning ticket or not, you had to enjoy an exceptional day of horse racing at Evergreen Park.
