Preview of Week 3 at RMTC

If the three-times lucky adage holds true, then the Rocky Mountain Turf Club should be your lucky charm this weekend. This is the third weekend of the RMTC’s Spring season, with nine races lined up for Saturday and Sunday for you to wager on. The biggest race of the weekend, Saturday’s fifth is the AQHA Maiden Challenge, with a $21,762 guaranteed purse. This race features the eight fastest maidens at the track. Laurie Ferguson, KR Streakin Version is among the eight, as is William Leech’s Northfork Sizzle and his second entry Go Jessin Beaver. These are the two leading trainers with four wins apiece after the first two weekends.

You’ll also see Buckey Stockwell’s Concealed Attraction; Ima Runnin First from trainer Les Adams; Robbie Overturf’s Nowtoastthelady; and Mike Bugeaud has Snow Phoenix. This Challenge, is a Quarter Horse Stakes race, and covers 350 yards. The fourth race is also a 350 yard dash.

The remaining of Saturday’s races are all Thoroughbred runs, the longest being the ninth, a six furlong run. The ninth race should be another dandy, over six and a half furlongs, Coming out of the field will be Pete Dubois’ General Gabe; Jim Depew’s PR Orphan and Allen Goodsell’s Stopped Short, along with five other fine horses. Opening the card will be a five and a half maiden run with jockeys like Scott Sterr on Rule The Race, trained by former jockey Randy Cunningham; Valentino McBean on Rozaman; and trainer Lyle Magnuson’s Three Point Cash.

Sunday is another nine-race card, and only the first and second races, at 350 yards, is a Quarter Horse sprint. Stan Marks, tied for the training lead with four, has a pair of horses in Sunday, one in the seventh and another in the eighth. The  trainer saddles Excess Baggage in the five and a half furlong seventh and then Aunt Lucy will carry Stan’s colours in the eighth. Martin Ortiz will ride both mounts. Longtime horseman Loren Bourne had his horse Driftin Smoke in Sunday’s fifth race, a five and half furlong run with leading jockey Jose Rocha aboard

After five day or running, or two weekends, Rocha and Freddy Fuentes lead the riders with eight wins apiece while Blandford Stewart has five wins and Ortiz, four. On the trainers’ side William Leech, Stan Marks and Laurie Ferguson all have four wins and Buckey Stockwell has three. Post times both days is set for 1:15 p.m.
