Holiday Weekend at RMTC

There’s only one way to spend this holiday weekend, and that’s at the Rocky Mountain Turf Club in Lethbridge.

There’ll be three full days of racing, post time is 1:15 p.m. each day – Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Few sports equal the thrill of live horse racing and the RMTC offers 19 races through the three days, from Quarter horses to Thoroughbreds – with six races Saturday, seven races Sunday and six races Monday

Saturday’s card features a Horsemen’s Open Derby, Division 2, over 350 yard, and covering the same distance a Horsemen’s Open Derby Division One sprint.

These two Quarter Horse sprints feature entries for trainers like Janice Sather, Bruce Ironshirt and Allan Goodsell in Division Two and Bucky Stockwell, Angelle Carter and William Leech among the Division One entrants.

The card also includes three five furlong races and a six furlong affair.

Sunday there’ll be six Thoroughbred races and a 300 yard Quarter Horse race kicking off the card. There’ll also be a three furlong run with horses like At The Bada Bing, Want The Facts, Stamp of Approval and Awesome T among the seven entries.

Holiday Monday there’ll be six races presented.

A 300 yard race kicks off the card, followed by four, five furlong runs and a five and a half furlong gallop.

Top trainers going after wins Monday include Lyle Magnuson, Stan Marks, Les Adams, Pete Dubois, Jim Depew and Nellie Pigeau.

After two days of racing  the leading rider is Freddy Fuentes with five victories and Jose O. Rocha with four.

On the trainers front four are tied with two wins apiece, William Leech, 86-year-old Stan Marks, Buckey Stockwell and Laurie Ferguson.

The show also includes the Dixieland Jazz Band, a kiddies Candy Toss, and food, drinks and Vegas-style slots action inside Bullys.
